Grading The Draft, Team By Team

April 7, 2023 (Federal League Wire Service)

The pre-season draft meetings took place last month. 30 players were drafted and several of them will appear on their teams' Opening Day rosters.
The Davie Goliaths selected Raul Garcia, a 30 year old pitcher/third baseman from Miami Gardens with the first overall pick.
Both Hollywood Stars and Margate Sentries declined to pick, while the the Hallandale Twins made the most selections by choosing seven players

A complete list of the draft results can be found here.

Original Division
Fort Lauderdale Atlantics: Paul Charlot, 3B; Jimmy Martinez, LHP/1B/OF; Daniel Lopez Colina, INF/OF, Trekel James, SS/2B
Charlot has big time power and provides a strong glove at the hot corner. Martinez is a versatile lefty that will aid the mound corps.
        Grade: B

Broward Cubs: None selected.
Remarkably, despite having a paper thin roster, the Cubbies elected to forego the draft.
        Grade: F

Sunrise Sunsets: David Hall, OF; Ryan Kolben, C; Michayah Brown, C*
Hall is a good outfield prospect. Kolben is a catcher with a high upside.
        Grade: B+

Hallandale Twins: Francisco Zabala, RHP/OF; Bernan Flores, OF; Artur Cary, OF; Ernesto Vera, SS; Randy Banner, RHP/OF
The Fraternals made some intelligent, but conservative picks. Every one of these players could be in the Opening Day lineup.
        Grade: B-

Expansion Division
Davie Goliaths: Ronnie Keaton, SS; Elikam Brown, RHP/OF; Anibal Mendez, RHP/OF; Tabari Smotherman, RHP/INF, Luis Diaz Santiago, RHP
The Philistines had a bountiful draft. Keaton is a pro level infielder. Brown and Mendez will help.
        Grade: A

Tri-Cities Tritons: Nick Grassetti, OF/2B; Matthew Consiglio, OF; John Cavallo*, 3B/1B; Aribel Castillo, SS
Due to previous trades, the Water Dwellers did not get to select until the late rounds. Under the circumstances, they acquired some players that may be useful in the future.
        Grade: C+

Margate Sentries: Gabriel Gonzalez, 2B; Michael Leyba, 3B/C; Luis Figueroa, 3B; Paris Ketema, OF; Dalton Ketema, OF/1B; Matt Beuka, RHP/SS; Wilton Miranda, 2B/OF; Jameel Nairne, OF; Mauricio Sequeira, OF
A solid draft for the Gatekeepers. The roster needed depth upgrades and this crop provides it.
        Grade: B-

Hollywood Stars: None selected.
For the fourth consecutive season, the Stars will rely on their own scouting network to find prospects and did not make any selections. So far, it is a strategy that has worked out for the Snydermen.
        Grade: N/A
