The Draft, Team By Team
April 2, 2019 (Federal League Wire Service)
The pre-season draft meetings took
place last month. 38 players were drafted
and all are hoping to make an impact when play opens during the
week of April 23.
Shortstop Joel Barroso, a former member of the Tampa Bay Rays
organization, was the first
player selected in the draft.
A complete list of the draft results can be found here.
Original
Division:
Broward Cubs: Jonathan Ortiz, OF/SS; Raul Lopez,
SS/2B; Clinton McCoy, INF/OF; Ronald Torres, 1B/OF;
Felix Maganda, C; Eduardo Combatti, INF; Dixon Torres,
INF; Patrick
Keane, 1B/OF
The Cubs were very busy in the off season trade market,
so they were able to focus their draft on prospects, rather than
being in the position of having to draft players that might have
to fill holes as soon as opening day.
Ortiz should crack the lineup right away. Combatti and Keane will
begin as role players.
The grade would be higher if they had been able to sign a few more
draftees. Grade: C+
Hallandale Twins: Javier
Cruz, C; Jacob Stevens, 3B; Christian Reyes, OF; Doug Robinson,
LHP/1B; Matt Rosado, C/2B; Jose Manuel Zeldon, 2B/SS
Cruz and Stevens are top prospects, but have yet to sign. Reyes
will help with the Twins' lack of outfield depth. The Fraternals
needed to draft some pitching prospects, but were unable to do so. Update
on 4/12/19: Cruz has signed. Stevens signed on 4/22.
Grade: C Updated Grade: B
Sunrise
Sunsets: Jorge Romero, RHP/3B; Gweshaughn Richards,
1B*;
Romulo Matamoros, 2B/OF
The Twilighters swung a trade that sent the power hitting Richards
to the Stars in exchange for shortstop Luis Diaz. Getting first
round pick Romero and Diaz signed make this an excellent draft.
Grade: A
Fort Lauderdale Atlantics: Aquiles
Torrealba, RHP/INF; Jorge Hechevaria, RHP/2B; William Quintero,
3B; Nick Hernandez, INF/OF; Jesus Capriles, INF; Luis
Uffre,
INF
The
Atlantics took some fliers on a few long shots. So far, the strategy
has yielded few results. Torrealba, Hernandez, and Uffre are the only draftees
to sign and the Jackets' infield is already crowded.
Grade: D
Expansion Division:
Hollywood
Stars:
Joel Barroso, SS; Luis Diaz, SS*; David Cintao, RHP; Victor
Hernandez, OF; Erickmay Simancas, INF; Patrick Richards,
Jr., 3B; Anthony Frisone, RHP/OF
The Stars drafted the two best shortstops in the draft, Barroso
and Diaz, and then traded Diaz to get the potent bat of Gweshaughn
Richards. If Richards signs, this in a terrific class.
If Richards doesn't sign, losing Diaz will sting, but Cintao,
Hernandez, and Simancas will all be solid contributors. Updated
on 4/10/19: Richards has signed.
Grade: B+ Updated Grade: A
Davie Goliaths:
Miguel Romaguera, RHP/INF; Jean Franco, 2B/SS; Jenkys Brito,
OF; Brett Smith; 2B
The G-Men got a solid pitching prospect in Romaguera and a
dependable glove in Smith. Franco may be the sleeper of the draft.
Grade: B
Margate Sentries: Michael
Santiago, C/3B; Elmer Pichardo, 2B*
Recent trades for pitcher Raul Ascanio and second baseman Osvaldo
Capote had reaped big dividends for the Gatekeepers, but have left
them with few draft picks, and none in the early rounds. They did
well to pluck the sure handed Pichardo in the late rounds, but
traded him to the Atlantics prior to opening day.
Grade: C-
Tri-Cities
Tritons:
Harry Del Valle, LHP/OF; Ruben Castellanos, RHP/OF; Matthew
Torres, C
Del Valle and Castellanos are quality additions. The Tritons need
catching depth, so they have to hope Torres signs.
Grade: B-
*Denotes traded
