Doc Guida pitched five and a third innings to notch the win.
Guida scattered nine hits, allowing three runs. Jimmy Dingus
pitched three and two thirds innings of one run relief and was
awarded a save.
Joe Feller made his second start of the series for the Yanks and
suffered his second loss. Feller was responsible for seven
earned runs on 18 hits in another complete game performance.
The 'Neers broke a 2-2 tie with a five run rally in the sixth
inning. Anthony Tomasi's RBI single and Ryan Lohnes' RBI triple,
along with an RBI double by Billy Mulligan, keyed the inning.
The Yanks had opened the scoring with an RBI double by Luis Soto
in the third, but the Bocaneers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the
fourth as Joe Tomasi tripled home two runs. The Yanks tied the
score in the bottom of the fourth as Chris Bartokis singled home
Miguel Franquiz.
Anthony Tomasi's and Eric Bigham's three hits each paced the 'Neers.
Ryan Lohnes, who had two hits and two runs scored, was named the
playoff MVP after the game.
The Bocaneers bid a fond farewell to manager Eric Raskin as
Raskin will be leaving the team to take over as manager of the
Expansion Division's Sunrise Sunsets. With Raskin at the helm,
the 'Neers won the division title five times in 10 seasons.
Bocaneers Beat Yanks In Game 1 Of Finals:
The Boca Raton Bocaneers took a one game to none lead in the
Celestial Division's best of three Championship Final Series
with a 7-1 win over the Southern Yankees in Game 1 of the
series.
The Bocaneers, seeking their second title in a row and their
fourth in the past five seasons, sent lefty Kevin Brown to the
hill. Brown was opposed by the Yanks' ace, Joe Feller.
Most of the damage occurred in the second and third innings as
the 'Neers scored three runs in each frame. RBI doubles by Jimmy
Dingus and Billy Mulligan in the second helped the Corsairs to a
3-0 lead. An RBI ground out by Mulligan and a two run single by
Mike Workinger increased the lead to 6-0 in the third.
Meanwhile, Brown held the Yanks in check, limiting their lineup
to four singles and two walks in seven innings. Doc Guida tossed
two innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits.
Feller took the loss in a complete game effort, permitting six
earned runs on 14 hits.
Ryan Lohnes and Jimmy Dingus led the 'Neers with three hits
each. Both players scored twice. Dingus drove in two runs.
The Yanks scored their lone run in the top of the ninth as Joe
D'Arelli singled, Chris Bartzokis bunted for a single, and Bob
Esposito walked. Feller then bounced into a force play that
scored D'Arelli before Guida retired Ken Silberling on a pop up
to the catcher to end the game.
The Bocaneers will look to sweep the series, and the Yankees
will be seeking to send the series to a third and final game,
when the two teams meet in Game 2, scheduled for Saturday.
Yanks Trip Tribe, Advance To Finals:
The Southern Yankees will make their second appearance in the
Celestial Division finals in the past three seasons after
scoring a 7-4, first round, playoff win over the Coconut Creek
Indians.
Joe Feller pitched a complete game eight hitter for the Yanks,
outdueling the Indians' ace, Mike Draper. Feller walked one, hit
one, and struck out one.
The Yanks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Bob
Esposito reached on an error and scored on another. The Yanks
built a 3-0 lead in the third on Esposito's two run double.
In the fourth, the Tribe tied the score with a three run rally.
Carlos Rosa doubled with two out and Jake Brier followed with a
two run home run. Frank Pagliughi walked, stole second, and
scored as Jason Legunn reached on an error.
The score did not remain tied for long as the Yanks took a 4-3
lead in the bottom of the fourth. Ken Silberling drew a one out
walk and then scored as Jerry Wichert and Gary Cruz struck
consecutive singles.
In the sixth, the Yanks tacked on two insurance runs as Chris
Bartzokis and Silberling drilled back to back one out singles.
Wichert's double scored Bartzokis, and a single by Luis Soto
plated Silberling for a 6-3 lead.
The Yanks tacked on another run in the seventh as Miguel
Franquiz led off with a double and moved to third on n infield
single by Esposito. On the play, Draper, who made a diving
attempt at the ball, was injured on the play. With Sergio Lebron
on in relief, Bartzokis came through with a single that scored
Franquiz.
Feller held the Indians at bay until the ninth. With one out in
the final frame, Brier doubled and scored on a pinch hit single
by Tom Fracasse, but that was as close as the Tribe would get.
Draper was charged with the loss after permitting four earned
runs on eight hits in six innings. The Tribe's ace walked three
and fanned four.
The Yankees advance to meet the defending champion Boca Raton
Bocaneers in the Celestial Division's best of three final series
next week.
