Jimmy Dingus pitched six strong innings to gain the win and
Anthony Tomasi earned a save with three innings of stellar
relief. Dingus, who drove in the winning run in Game 1, drove in
the tying run in the seventh with an RBI single.
The Bocaneers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on
an RBI single by Tracy Greenbaum and a sacrifice fly by Steve
Prondecki.
In the home half of the first, the Royals took a 3-2 lead.
Darren Saliva and Jay Caddle had two out RBI singles and the go
ahead run scored as a result of an error.
Brett Lancaster, who went the distance for the Royals, protected
the lead until the seventh. Tomasi reached on a two base error
and then scored as Dingus flared a single to left. Two batters
later, Eric Bigham forced Dingus at second, but advanced to
third on another error and then scored on a wild pitch to give
the Corsairs a 4-3 lead.
The Royals loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but
Tomasi was brought in to pitch and he escaped the jam with a
pair of strikeouts and an inning ending flyball.
After the 'Neers added two insurance runs in the top of the
ninth on doubles by Dingus and Prondecki and an RBI single by
Scott Arenberg, the Royals threatened again in the bottom of the
ninth. Rick Martinez coaxed a one out walk before being forced
out at second on Lancaster's grounder to third. Darren Saliva
followed with a double, his fourth hit of the game, that sent
Lancaster to third.
Up to the plate stepped Demetrio Green, perhaps the loop's most
dangerous power hitter, representing the tying run, but any
opportunity for drama dissipated as Tomasi dispatched Green on a
grounder to first to end the threat, the game, and the series.
Dingus, who allowed five earned runs on 16 hits in 11 innings
pitched, went 1-0 in the series, and batted .429 with three RBI
was named the Celestial Division's Playoff MVP for the second
time in his career.
Game 1 Highlights-Bocaneers Outlast Royals In 11 Innings:
The Boca Raton Bocaneers claimed the first game of the best of
three Celestial Series and moved to within another win of
capturing the team's fourth league championship. The 'Neers
scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to notch a 9-8,
come from behind, win over the Palm Beach Royals.
Jimmy Dingus drew a four pitch, bases loaded, walk to force home
Eric Raskin with the winning run in the 11th. Jason Burns, who
pitched all 11 innings for the Royals, had walked Scott Arenberg,
earlier in the inning, to force home the tying run.
The Bocaneers had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on
an RBI double by Anthony Tomasi and a pair of errors. The Royals
scored a run in the third when Steve Trodick led off with a
double and scored on a single by Jay Caddle.
In the fifth, the Royals took a 3-2 lead as Brian Hauss singled
and scored on a double by Caddle. Gary Valdivieso's ground out
drove in Caddle, who had gone to third on the throw home when
Hauss scored. In the bottom of the inning, the Corsairs answered
with three runs. Tomasi drove in a run with a sacrifice fly,
Dingus plated a run on a RBI ground out, and Steve Prondecki
singled in a run as the Apertures grabbed a 5-3 lead.
The lead was short lived, however, as the Royals scored three
times in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Rick Martinez
and Brett Lancaster opened the inning with back to back singles.
Martinez scored on a double by Demetrio Green. Lancaster and
Green both scored on a double by Trodick.
An RBI single by Hauss in the eighth increased the Royals' lead
to 7-5, but the Bocaneers tied the score in the bottom of the
eighth. After Dingus and Prondecki opened the inning with
consecutive singles, Eric Eigham grounded out as both runners
advanced. Kevin Brown walked to load the bases before Mike
Belanger grounded into a force play at second that allowed
Dingus to score. When the relay throw was wild, Prondecki loped
home with the tying run. After Mike Workinger and Eric Raskin
worked out walks to reload the bases, catcher Brett Lancaster
picked Belanger off of third to end the rally.
Both teams threatened, but neither team scored until the 11th.
In the top of the inning, Andrew Wilson drew a one out walk and
stole second. Wilson then scored on a two out single by Burns to
give the Royals an 8-7 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Belanger led off with a single, but
Workinger flew out to center for the first out. Raskin singled
to left and then Ryan Lohnes reached on an infield single. Only
a great stop by Green at first base kept the tying run from
scoring.
The tying run did score, however as the next batter, Arenberg,
walked. Burns induced Tomasi to pop out to third for the second
out, but then walked Dingus to force in the winning run.
Tomasi, who pitched three innings of relief and allowed one run
on two hits, received credit for the win. Burns, who went the
distance for the Royals, took the loss.
Arenberg's four hits led the 'Neers. Hauss had three hits to
pace the Royals.
The Bocaneers will go for the sweep, while the Royals will seek
to send the series to a decisive third game, as the series
continues with Game 2, scheduled for Sunday.
