Grading The Draft, Team By Team

August 11, 2015 (Federal League Wire Service)

The pre-season draft meetings ended late Monday night as team representatives filed out of the meeting room at the Federal League Conference Annex. 35 players were drafted and all are hoping to make an impact when play opens on September 12.
Juan Rivas, a left handed pitcher from Hialeah Gardens, drafted by the Hollywood Stars, was the first player selected in the draft.

A complete list of the draft results can be found here.

Original Division:

Hallandale Twins:
Carlos Valdes, C/INF; Jack Niadus, OF; Wilson Marte, OF; Patrick Murphy, C/INF/RHP; Guillermo Garcia, 3B; Jay Auriemma, 3B; Yamid Jaramillo, INF; Christopher Thompson, OF; Nathanael Rodriguez, 1B/3B; Jonathan Olivas, OF
The Twins drafted extensively and were active in the trade market as they intend to build from the ground up.
Carlos Valdes headlines a strong class that should provide depth to the roster
                Grade: B+

Sunrise Sunsets: Pedro Marte, OF; Robert Williams, OF/2B; Tommy Barnes, 1B/OF; Adolpho Rodriguez, 3B
Marte is a highly regarded outfielder that may have some signability issues. Williams is already signed and will join the active roster immediately.
This was a curious draft by the Twilighters.
                Grade: C+

Fort Lauderdale Blazers: Luis Lorenzo, OF/INF; Wilfran Rondon, 1B/3B; Lenin Lopez, RHP/OF; Nicholas Capitini, C/1B
Lorenzo was an interesting choice, but then the Jackets included the promising outfielder in a multi-player swap with the Twins. The other players selected have potential, but all appear to more projects than prospects at this point.
This is another draft strategy that is hard to figure.
                Grade: B-

Broward Cubs: Emilio Borges, 3B; Kenneth Perez, INF; Brian Miller, RHP/3B
The defending champs did well to address their needs.
All three picks will get an opportunity to contribute immediately.
                Grade: A

Expansion Division:

Hollywood Stars: Juan Rivas, LHP/OF; Jose Hernandez; INF; Jeheil Russo, 3B/OF
The Stars got two of the most highly rated players in the draft in Rivas and Hernandez. The trick will be signing them.
Stars' manager Billy De Vuyst turned in another strong draft. The Stars got two of the draft's most highly regarded prospects and addressed their immediate needs, provided Rivas and Hernandez sign on the dotted line.
                Grade: A-

Davie Goliaths: Troy Ambros, C/INF; John Cuomo, OF; Danny Best, 1B
There is absolutely no doubt that the Goliaths picked very talented players, whether or not any of them winds up on the Philistines' opening day roster will be interesting.
All three players will present different signing challenges, and that holds down the grade.
                Grade: B-

Margate Sentries: Jesus Delgado, OF; Terrence Bel, OF; Jamail Sims, OF; Daniel Kreinest, 3B, Ciro Buttacavoli, 1B/3B
The Gatekeepers employed a curious drafting strategy that went against the grain of their previous style. For one of the few times in recent memory, the Sentries' selections seem to have no particular focus.
On the one hand, the Fightin' Phils chose the very talented Delgado, but on the other hand, the team did little to address its most pressing needs in the middle infield and on the mound.
                Grade: C-

Tri-Cities Tritons: Stephen Rubin, LHP/OF; Jason Legunn, RHP/2B; Travis Tyrell, RHP
The Tritons went for pitching and more pitching.
Tyrell might end up being the best sleeper pick of this draft.
                Grade: B
