Grading
The Draft, Team By Team
March 27, 2022 (Federal League Wire Service)
The pre-season draft meetings took
place last week. 27 players were drafted
and several of them will appear on their teams' Opening Day rosters.
The Davie Goliaths selected Raul Garcia, a 30 year old
pitcher/third baseman from Miami Gardens with the first overall
pick.
Both Hollywood Stars and Margate Sentries declined to pick, while the
the Hallandale Twins made the most selections by choosing seven
players
A complete list of the draft results can be found here.
Original
Division:
Fort
Lauderdale Atlantics: Antonio
Aponte, LHP; Ryan
Maldonado, C/INF/OF*; Alain Vega, INF; Avi Kerzner, SS; Devin Santiago,
RHP/C/INF
The Atlantics addressed their most glaring need as they chose
Aponte with the second pick. Aponte will, likely, be slotted in at the
top of the Oceaneers' rotation.
Maldonado was flipped to the Tritons for a first round pick. Vega will challenge for starting jobs. Kerzner has a
strong bat, and, Santiago is versatile. If these three players sign,
the class will improve by a full grade Grade:
B
Broward Cubs: Nick Carfaro, C; Yefry Leon, SS*
Leon is, quite possibly, the best position player in the draft.
Carfaro is a solid catcher, and will help.
The two picks are strong selections, but, the Cubs may have missed out
on some opportunities to strengthen their roster by not picking in
later rounds.
Grade: B
Sunrise
Sunsets: Wyatt Stiles, RHP/DH
The Sunsets did
not have a lot of needs, so, taking, Stiles, a hard thrower will a
lot of upside potential makes perfect sense.
Grade: B+
Hallandale
Twins: Anthony
Izquiel, OF; Danny
Valencia, INF; Jared
Butler, 2B/OF; Thomas Doenig, OF; Brian
Mulero, 2B/3B; Jameel Nairne, OF: Jossian Gonzalez, OF
The Twins needed
to replace a lot of talent from last season, and, although Izquiel
is a nice pick, and Doenig is more than serviceable, there is
probably not a difference maker in the group.
Grade: C-
Expansion Division:
Davie
Goliaths: Raul
Garcia, RHP/3B; Noah McMurrain, C/1B: Bryce Banks OF/2B; Juan
Deus, 1B/OF; Wade
Edema, RHP/OF; Sam Nelson, OF
The Goliaths got their man in Garcia, and then added two young top
prospects in McMurrain and Banks. More importantly, they
immediately signed all three players.
With the remaining picks, The Philistines added bench depth
with Deus, a long range prospect in Edema, and a quality
outfielder in Nelson.
The only thing limiting this grade is that the G-Men were unable
to add more pitching.
Grade: A-
Tri-Cities
Tritons Jordy
Oriach, OF/1B; John Saiya, OF; Luis Polanco, 3B/SS; Augusto
Mendez,
OF; Santiago Vivas, OF; Gerardo Castellanos, OF
Oriach has pro potential and will be an immediate impact player
for the Water Dwellers. Saiya is a good glove man in the outfield.
Polanco has definite potential.
The team needed to get some some quality arms, but struck out in
that area.
Grade: B-
Margate Sentries: None selected.
The Sentries, during the Alex Rodriguez era, have not used the
draft very much. With the team being in a state of transition, it
might have been wise to vary that strategy this season
Grade: N/A
Hollywood Stars: None selected.
For the third consecutive season, the Stars will rely on their own scouting network to find prospects and
did not make any selections. So far, it has worked out for
the Snydermen.
Grade: N/A
Players listed in italics are
still unsigned.
