Grading The Draft, Team By Team

April 11, 2021 (Federal League Wire Service)

The pre-season draft meetings took place on February 26. 36 players were drafted and 26 of them will appear on their teams' Opening Day rosters.
The Fort Lauderdale Atlantics selected right handed pitcher Aaron Cooper with the first overall pick.
Two teams declined to pick, while the Davie Goliaths led all teams with nine selections. The Broward Cubs and Sunrise Sunsets chose eight players a piece.

A complete list of the draft results can be found here.

Original Division:

Fort Lauderdale Atlantics: Aaron Cooper, RHP/OF; Chris Altimirano, 3B; Nick Hernandez, INF, Christian Reyes, OF, James McOwen, OF

The Atlantics made the safe choice by picking Cooper, a promising righty. The 'Tics were interested in choosing Kevin Vignolo, but let him slide to the Sunsets as they were concerned that he might not sign. It looks like the Navigators chose wisely.
Hernandez, Reyes, and McOwen will add some pop to the lineup and provide some flexibility with their defensive abilities.
        Grade: B+

Hallandale Twins: Bryan Garcia, INF/OF; Matthew Torres, OF/C; Jack Levy, OF, Ariel Flores, RHP/OF; Brian Clancy, SS

The Twins injected some more youth, speed, and versatility in to their roster with Garcia, Flores, Clancy, and Levy. Not being able to ink Torres is a bit of a loss, but this is still a solid class.
         Grade: B

Sunrise Sunsets: Kevin Vignolo, RHP/SS; Juan De La Cruz, C; Cameron Josemond, OF, Stephen Lindsey, INF; Matt Murphy, INF/OF, Anthony Sanchez, INF/OF; Miguel Adrian 3B/1B; Jorge Suazo, OF/1B

The Sunsets made eight selections, but only wound up signing two players. The draft class itself is strong, Vignolo, Cruz, and Lindsey would have been nice additions, but the actual yield does not move the needle.
         Grade: C

Broward Cubs: Raymer Morla, C/INF; Erickmay Simancas, INF; David Armendariz, INF; Doinier Dominguez, 1B; Enzo Percovich, C/INF; Pedro Monier, OF; Jared Butler 2B/OF; Carlos Flores, SS

The Cubs were unable to sign Morla, their first pick in time for Opening Day. The rest of the class with supply the Cubbies with much needed depth, but there does not appear to be an immediate difference maker in the group.
         Grade: C+

Expansion Division:

Davie Goliaths: Zach Roberts, 3B; Juan Escobar, 2B; Domingo Cordero, OF; Carlos Suero, OF; Ornan Toledo, INF; Jonathan Manzueta, OF; Jeffrey Ortiz, RHP/INF, Anson Graumann, C/1B; Derek Bonner, RHP/OF

The Goliaths got a young catcher and a young pitcher in the late rounds after making safe, solid, choices in the early rounds. The youngsters looked primed to make a strong contribution, making this a very good class.
        Grade: B

Margate Sentries: Frank Cruz, SS/2B

The Sentries opted to mostly stand pat, selecting Cruz as an all purpose utility infielder.
        Grade: C-

Hollywood Stars: none selected.

The Stars rely on their own scouting network to find prospects and did not make any selections. They did use their draft picks to acquire infielder Deos Lopez from the Goliaths.
        Grade: B-

Tri-Cities Tritons: none selected.

The Tritons, once again, the league's deepest and most successful team did not draft any players this season.
        Grade: N/A

Players listed in italics are still unsigned.
