The Draft, Team By Team
August 29, 2018 (Federal League Wire Service)
The pre-season draft meetings
ended late one night as team representatives filed out
of the meeting room at the Federal League Conference Annex. 41 players were drafted
and all are hoping to make an impact when play opens this fall.
The Broward Cubs, who did not have a pick until the fourth round
this season due to trades, led the way with eight picks. The
Tri-Cities Tritons
only made you selection.
A complete list of the draft results can be found here.
Original Division
Delray Beach Mudcats: Jan Sanchez, OF/2B;
Michael Deeb, OF; Kirkland Festa, SS/2B; Evan Parana, OF;
Laz Martinez, 3B/1B; Edgar Quinones, SS Summary: The Whiskered Fish
addressed all of their needs, except for pitching. All six of
their picks should be able to contribute immediately. Deeb, a
player who has pro experience, and Quinones are already signed. This
is a solid class. Grade: B+
Hallandale Twins: Miguel Roman, RHP; Mitchell Bradley,
RHP/3B; Dayron Varona, OF; Luis Gonzalez, 2B; Colin
Byrne, SS/2B; Jesus Martinez, 3B/OF Summary: The Twins
took a top pitching prospect in Roman, an intriguing project in
Bradley, a hitter with tremendous potential in Varona, and two
middle infielders that are already signed. Grade: B
Broward Cubs: Dairon Recino, C; Raphael Andrade, OF*, Joyse Cardenas, SS;
Jonathan Machado, 2B; Carlos Ulloa, INF; Juan Deus, 1B; Jared
Butler, INF; Bryan Medina, OF Summary: Recino is an 18 year
old catching prospect. The Cubs traded Andrade to the Sunsets
for a future pick, but picked up two veterans (Reol and Mario
Alvarez) and a prospect, infielder Victor Carpente, in a trade
with the Stars. Considering the haul realized by the trades,
this is a very good group. Grade: B
Sunrise Sunsets:
Camron White, RHP; Enders Vargas, RHP/SS; Hairold
Salce, 3B/1B; Derek Von Achen, INF/OF* Summary:
The Twilighters got two high end pitching prospects, a power
hitting third baseman in Salce, and made two trades that netted
them former Florida Gator Raphael Andrade. Grade: A-
Expansion
Division
Hollywood Stars:
Anthony Masiello, LHP; Jhon Caramo, C; Brandon Von Achen,
LHP/OF; Erick Mass, C/1B; David Cruz, OF/2B; Francisco
Magoria, RHP/1B; Victor Carpente, 2B* Summary: The Stars
got, arguably, the draft's top pitching prospect in Masiello.
Caramo is raw, but has league experience. Mass has first rate
power. Von Achen is a sneaky lefty that could eat up innings. A
trade with the Sunsets yielded Von Achen's brother, a utility
player that will give the team depth.
Grade: B+
Davie Goliaths:
A.J. Alexio, SS/OF; Xavier Rodriguez, RHP/OF; Engels
Vargas, 2B; Jose Zambrano, RHP/3B;
Summary: The Philistines were not able to get a top of the
rotation starter and settled for two pitchers with long range
potential. The G-Men also picked an elite defender in Alexio.
Vargas, who possesses surprising power, may be the sleeper of the
draft.
Grade: B-
Margate Sentries:
Ralph Morel, RHP; Frank Cruz, SS/2B; Norman Sanchez, RHP/OF;
Cruz Humes, OF; Enrique Pino, INF
Summary: Signing Morel, a potential number two starter, is the key
to this draft for the Munguiamen. The other players are
serviceable, but considering that they lack top picks in the next
few drafts, it is imperative that they sign Morel.
Grade: C+
Tri-Cities
Tritons:
Elixeyris Monzon, OF; Summary: The Water Dwellers
decided to rest on the laurels and took a flyer on Monzon, an
relatively unknown outfielder that looks the part. Grade: C-
*denotes player traded.
