Grading The Draft, Team By Team

March 20, 2018 (Federal League Wire Service)

The pre-season draft meetings ended late Monday night as team representatives filed out of the meeting room at the Federal League Conference Annex. 33 players were drafted and all are hoping to make an impact when play opens during the week of April 22.
Cristian Reyes, a hard throwing right handed pitcher from Hialeah, drafted by the Davie Goliaths, was the first player selected in the draft.

A complete list of the draft results can be found here.

Original Division:

Broward Cubs: Nick Hernandez, OF; Tim Silk, 1B; Adam Gillstrap, RHP/OF; Brooks Turner, C/OF; Javier Morillo, SS
The Cubs needed a lot of help and drafted the best available players in each round.
The Cubbies emphasized drafting players that they figured would be easier to sign. This is never a bad strategy.
                Grade: B-

Delray Beach Mudcats:
Dylan Razack, C/1B; Giornic Sille, 1B/OF*; Stephen Werksman, LHP; Sean Tucker, C/OF; Randy Falcon, RHP/3B; Jose Zambrano, 3B/OF; Brian Finneran, LHP/1B; Daniel Berry, SS; Francisco Azuaje, OF; Pedro Pestano, SS; Jose Escandell, OF
The Mudcats, faced with a cast of holdout veterans, drafted a record tying 12 players.
Trading Sille to the Sentries for RHP Chris Delgado is a gamble, but Delgado is the safer choice.
                Grade: B

Hallandale Twins: Juan Mendez, OF/1B; Sergio Perez, 2B; Sam Nelson, RHP/OF; Juan Andres Gomez, OF/1B; Gregg Rossman, OF; Juan Pablo Gomez, INF
The Twins drafted extensively and addressed their depth issues, but did not get as much pitching help as they figure to need.
Mendez will be a productive addition to their lineup. Nelson, the only pitcher they drafted, has a great arm, but is a long term project.
                Grade: C+

Sunrise Sunsets: None selected.
The Twilighters decided to stand on the laurels and trade their top picks for future draft choices.
                Grade: Incomplete

Expansion Division:

Davie Goliaths: Cristian Reyes, RHP; Luis Velandia, C; Alejandro Uzcategui, RHP/1B; Paul Nolan, C
The Goliaths got a top flight pitcher that is already signed.
Velandia might emerge as the best position player in this class. Uzcategui will help upgrade the mound staff.
                Grade: A-

Margate Sentries: Chris Delgado, RHP*; Osniel Sanchez, OF
The Sentries traded Delgado for top outfield prospect Giornic Sille.
Talent-wise, this would be a very good haul, but, the Gatekeepers need to sign both of these players for this to be a useful draft.
Grade: C (B+, if both players sign)

Hollywood Stars: Raul Ascanio, RHP*; Matthew Rodriguez, 2B/3B; Carlos Parra, INF/OF; William Acevedo, RHP/OF
The Stars, already boasting a significantly upgraded roster, took a flyer on four interesting players.
Ascanio is a top pitching prospect, but was traded to the Sentries for five future picks.
                Grade: C+

Tri-Cities Tritons: Pedro Gutierrez, INF
The Tritons got another strong hitter for their lineup.
Grade: C (B+, if he signs)
