Celestial Series, Game 3-Bocaneers Win Championship:
The Boca Raton Bocaneers won the Celestial Division championship
for the second time in team history with a decisive 13-2 Game 3
win over the heavily favored Coconut Creek Indians. The victory
capped a remarkable Cinderella story for the underdog 'Neers.
Jimmy Dingus, who would be named Playoff MVP after the game,
tossed a complete game seven hitter for his second win of the
post season.
The Swashbucklers scored first as Jon Solovy singled to lead off
the second and then scored on a pair of errors. The Tribe tied
the score in the bottom of the second in a similar manner after
Matt Courant led off with a single.
In the third, the Indians took the lead as Casey McCarthy
stroked a two out single, stole second, and scored on a single
by Courant.
The Indians held the lead until the Bocaneers exploded for four
runs in the fifth. An RBI single by Solovy and a two run single
by Michael Martin, both coming with two out, highlighted the
rally.
Eric Raskin's RBI double in the sixth stretched the lead to four
and then the Bocaneers salted the game away with a seven run
outburst in the seventh.
Dingus and Eric Bigham led the Bocaneers with three hits each.
Courant's two hits paced the Tribe.
Justin Shiver started for the Indians and was tagged with the
loss after allowing three earned runs on 12 hits in six and a
third innings.
The Bocaneers, who prevailed after a roller coaster regular
season, celebrated a well deserved, if somewhat unlikely,
championship that served as a testament to perseverance and
teamwork.
Celestial Series, Game 2-Indians Outlast Bocaneers To Stay
Alive:
The Coconut Creek Indians sent the Celestial Division Finals to
a third and final game after notching a 14-12, 10 inning, win in
the completion of the previously suspended second game.
Jake Brier drew a bases loaded walk to force in the go ahead run
and then Jeff Mathis doubled in three runs to give the Tribe a
four run lead.
The Bocaneers refused to go quietly, however, as they rallied
for two runs in the bottom of the 10th on RBI singles by Jimmy
Dingus and Jon Solovy and had the winning run at the plate with
one out before Brandan Gunnoe fanned Rob Amador and retired Eric
Raskin on a fly out to left to end the threat and the game.
Gunnoe, who pitched five innings of relief and permitted four
runs on five hits, gained credit for the win. Raskin, who was
charged with seven runs on seven hits in five innings took the
loss.
Gunnoe, Mathis, and Casey McCarthy led the Tribe with four hits
each.
Scott Arenberg paced the Corsairs with four hits.
Rain Suspends Game 2 Of Finals:
The Boca Raton Bocaneers, needing one win to capture the
Celestial Division championship, and the Coconut Creek Indians
were tied 10-10 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning of
Game 2 of the best of three Celestial Division Finals when a
severe thunderstorm dumped several inches of rain on Fort
Lauderdale Stadium.
The game was suspended and was schedule for completion on
Sunday, but the rain persisted through the evening, forcing the
league to consider mid-week scheduling options.
Both team managers and the league office will be consulted
Sunday morning and a schedule for the remainder of the series
should be announced shortly thereafter.
Celestial Series, Game 1-Bocaneers Blast Indians:
The Boca Raton Bocaneers notched a 10-2 win over the defending
champion Coconut Creek Indians in the first game of the best of
three Celestial Division Finals.
Surprise starter Eric Raskin pitched a complete game six hitter
for the 'Neers. Raskin was in complete control throughout the
game, walking one, hitting three, and fanning three, and
inducing the powerful Tribe lineup into hitting soft fly balls
and weak grounders.
Kevin Brown had three hits and two RBI for the Corsairs as did
Anthony Tomasi.
The Bocanners jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second inning against
Indian starter Justin Shiver. Tomasi led off the inning and
reached on an error, Jimmy Dingus singled, and Tomasi scored on
a single by Jon Solovy. Dingus and Solovy scored when Brown
doubled. Brown scored on a two out single by Tracy Greenbaum.
Raskin pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the third and
surrendered a run in the fourth, but was relatively trouble free
the rest of the way.
Brandan Gunnoe led the Tribe with three hits.
The Bocaneers can win their second Celestial Division
championship with a win in Game 2, scheduled for Saturday. The
pennant winning Indians, meanwhile, will be looking to extend
the series to a third and final game.
Saturday's Play-In-Bocaneers Rip Royals:
The Boca Raton Bocaneers scored six runs in the third inning as
they romped to a 14-1 victory over the favored Palm Beach Royals
in the Celestial Division Play-In.
Brad Weiss collected three hits and drove in four runs to lead
the 'Neers. Jon Solovy and Kevin Brown also had three hits each.
Solovy drove in two and Brown drove in one.
Anthony Tomasi and Jimmy Dingus combined on a two hitter for the
Corsairs. Burt Anderson's first inning single and Bill Calla's
RBI double later in the frame off of Tomasi were the Royals'
only hits and created their only run.
Brett Lancaster started for the Royals and was charged with the
loss after permitting 11 runs on 13 hits in four innings.
The Bocaneers advance to the best of three Celestial Division
Finals against the defending champion Coconut Creek Indians.
