Federal
League All-Stars Trounce Miami AUBL
January 31, 2015 (Federal League Wire Service)
In what could be the last game of any major significance
ever played at Fort Lauderdale Stadium, the Federal League
All-Star team defeated the Miami AUBL All-Stars, 7-1 on a brisk
Saturday afternoon.
Peter Maestrales, David Leon, Joe Iacobucci, John Spellman, and
Jeff O' Kelley collected two hits each for the Federal League
aggregation. Iacobucci had three RBI.
Michael Cimilluca, Brant Spring, and Kevin Druckman all tossed
scoreless innings for the Federal Leaguers. Cimilluca started the
game and blanked the AUBL'ers in the first. Garrett Rogers pitched
the next four innings, surrendering only an unearned run in the
bottom of the third. Rogers, who permitted three hits, walked one,
and struck out six, got credit for the win.
Spring worked a perfect sixth, striking out one. Druckman pitched
a perfect seventh, getting three lazy fly ball outs. Danny
Hernandez tossed two scoreless innings, striking out two, to end
the game.
The Federal Leaguers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
David Leon singled with one out and scored on a two out double off
of the left field wall by John Spellman.
After the AUBL tied the score in the bottom of the third, the
Federal Leaguers pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth.
Chris Craig and Jeff O' Kelley drew back to back two out walks
from eventual losing pitcher Jose Batatino-Blanco. Maestrales and
Leon followed with consecutive RBI singles to give the Federal
Leaguers a 3-1 advantage.
Spellman led off the fifth with a single, stole second, and scored
on a pinch hit single by Dominic Ficarra.
O' Kelley opened the sixth with a base hit, stole second, and
scored on a two out RBI single by Iacobucci. The Federal Leaguers
closed out the scoring in the top of the eighth on a Iacobucci's
two run single.
The win avenged the Federal League's loss to the AUBL squad in
last year's all-star contest, and improved the Federal League's
record in inter-league all-star competition to 11-2.
Teo Zorrilla of the Hollywood Stars, still recovering from heart
surgery that he incurred after an on field medical emergency in
December, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to a standing
ovation from the crowd and his fellow players.
